Why More Men Than Ever are Embracing Botox

A glance at the beauty aisle in any store may suggest that only women are interested in stopping the aging process, but men want to look younger, too. More men are turning to cosmetic surgery to help. Plastic surgeons estimate that nearly 20 percent of their clients are men. In fact, Botox® for men has become so popular that it is even being marketed with the catchy term “Brotox.”

Men who choose Botox typically undergo minimally invasive procedures, such as injectables. These help restore your skin’s appearance, smoothing out wrinkles with a solution that acts as soft tissue by filling out facial lines. For instance, Juvederm® is a dermal filler that can add volume to your lips and certain areas in your forehead.

Botox injections work by blocking signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. The treatment temporarily reduces the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing muscles in your forehead or the area around your eyes. At Nostalgia Family Medicine in Longwood, Florida, Dr. Brandon Fletcher specializes in administering Botox treatments.

What to expect

Before you get started with your Botox session, be sure to advise Dr. Fletcher if you’re currently taking any allergy medications, sleeping aids, or muscle relaxants that might interfere with the treatment. Stop taking blood thinners several days before the procedure to minimize potential bruising and bleeding.

Once the procedure begins, you’ll be lying on your back comfortably in the treatment room while Dr. Fletcher administers the Botox. Most Botox recipients don’t report any discomfort during the procedure, and they compare the sensation to a session of acupuncture. However, if you want to minimize the possibility of any discomfort, you may request a numbing agent such as a topical anesthesia.

The number of injections needed during your first treatment will depend on the area that is being treated.The whole procedure is fairly short and typically takes about 25 minutes. However, you may need to come back for follow-up treatments to maintain your smoother, younger look.  

That’s it. The procedure should not inhibit you from carrying on with the rest of your day.

Do not rub the treated area for at least 24 hours, as this will prevent the solution from spreading to different areas. You may experience some redness, bruising, and swelling of the skin. Results are not visible right away and may take a few days to appear.

The treated area should look smoother, giving you a more refreshed appearance. Botox should not keep you from smiling or engaging with your facial muscles normally. However, because the treatment aims to relax muscles temporarily, it could restrict some movement around the sites of injection. The effects last around three months or longer. Depending on the area you’re treating, you may need follow-up injections to maintain the effects.
